La Nascosta was established by Antonio Mastrojanni, who was among the first winemakers in Montalcino, where he managed the Mastrojanni Winery Estate from 1980 to 2003, producing some of the most acclaimed “Brunello di Montalcino” wines. Although the family Estate was acquired in 2008 by the “Illy Coffee Group”, the name “Brunello Mastrojanni” was maintained and continues to be a point of reference for the entire appellation, regularly obtaining prestigious awards and recognition.

The founding of La Nascosta, few kilometers away from Montalcino, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia started in 2011, when Antonio, recognizing the enormous potential of the area for wine production, launched this new initiative. The Estate was formed progressively, through the acquisition of small plots which used to be cultivated by the village people, before a process of emigration led to their virtual abandonment.

1975-2008

In the mid-1970s Gabriele Mastrojanni and his wife Delia decided to buy land in the south-eastern part of Montalcino by Castel Nuovo dell'Abbate . In the first difficult years of activity, the project struggled to take off. Only when the lawyer's son, Antonio Mastrojanni, joined the company it was decided to focus exclusively on the production of wine. Finally, after a few years, the first positive results started to appear.

From 1990 until today, Mastrojanni's Brunello di Montalcino became one of the reference points of the entire appellation, regularly obtaining the greatest national and international awards. For family reasons, after Gabriele Mastrojanni's death, in 2008 the family members decided to sell the company. This was acquired entirely by the Illy Caffé Group which still maintains the Mastrojanni name very high in the market of top quality wine.

After the founding of La Nascosta, few kilometers away from Montalcino, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia started in 2011, when Antonio, recognizing the enormous potential of the area for wine production, launched this new initiative. The Estate was formed progressively, through the acquisition of small plots which used to be cultivated by the village people, before a process of emigration led to their virtual abandonment.

Relying on his long agronomic experience, Antonio realized that the characteristics of the plots of the Estate were excellent to grow Sangiovese Grosso, but that some were particularly suitable for white varieties. This led him to plant international white grapes, such as Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, in addition to the local Moscato and Malvasia vines.

Planting international white grapes went against the prevailing stream of thought that wants producers to remain attached to their traditional local varieties. Antonio’s controversial strategy, while a great challenge, has proven to be right. Proof is the amazing quality of La Nascosta white wines.

2015 - 2019

We are in 2015 when Luca Mastrojanni, Antonio's eldest son, enters the business alongside his father in all the agronomic and oenological phases. In a short time, given Luca's growing involvement, Antonio decides to entrust him with the role of company administrator.

In the following years, after a long planning activity, the new company cellar was built on the project designed and directed by the architect Nicola Mastrojanni , Luca's brother. In 2018 , with the first bottled vintage, the La Nascosta brand was created.

In 2019, Gerhard Sanin was appointed winemaker of the company. Originally from Caldaro, he builds his vast oenological experience on vines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Gerwustraminer and Chardonnay. It takes up the innovative challenge of La Nascosta by fully embracing the company philosophy .

The La Nascosta project is the new project of the Mastrojanni family born in 2011 in the heart of the Val d'Orcia. The company, mainly led by Antonio Mastrojanni and his son Luca, has benefited from the skills of the entire family nucleus including those of Concha, an international economist with thirty years of experience, and those of Nicola, an architect passionate about wine and design.
